I’m Jess, a hand weaver living in the Southern Highlands of Australia (lovely Gundungurra Country).
When I’m at my loom, the worries of the world fall away from my shoulders, and I can lose myself in the texture of natural yarns, and vibrant colours.
I’m happiest when teasing my brain with new weave structures and sampling, sampling, sampling. As a weaver, there’s always something to learn!
I started weaving on the humblest of looms, but now I have a several large looms, including a computer dobby. One day I hope to add a draw loom to my collection š¤©.
I’m a tinkerer
My first shaft loom came with four shafts, but I converted it to a counter balance action and sacrificed two shafts in the process.
This small loom wove many metres of cloth before my Spring II arrived.
I’m not afraid to make changes and experiment with new ideas!
Always learning
The first warp on my 110 cm Spring II loom was an exercise from the Jane Stafford School of Weaving.
I’ve been intensively learning to weave via Jane’s online School of Weaving, as well as submitting work to the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of NSW as part of their Certificate of Weaving.
There will always be something to learn from weavers past and future!
Historical research
Weaving is an ancient tradition with a fundamental impact on people’s lives throughout history.
I research and reproduce historical textiles to keep alive techniques that might otherwise be lost, and to understand the importance of cloth to cultures through time.
The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) is my medieval re-enactment group, and you can find me there under the pseudonym “Eleonora Rose”.
