My work was recently on display at the Gallery on Track in Goulburn, for a solo exhibition entitled “Unthinking”: Weaving to Forget the World.
Weaving is my way to forget: when I’m at my loom, the worries of the world fall away from my shoulders, and I can lose myself in the texture of natural yarns, and a tangle of vibrant colours.
I find the most effective “unthinking” happens when I’m deep diving into complex weave structures, and sampling to discover new possibilities in cloth. When I let go of weaving for a purpose, and simply weave for the experience, I carve out a quiet space in the corner of my mind where the chaos of outside thoughts can’t reach me. It nourishes me.
This collection is the result of my recent “unthinking”: chaotic, colourful, weird.
I had over 100 works on display, with many samples of different weave structures.
- Deflected Double Weave
- Honeycomb
- Waffle Weave
- Four Colour Double Weave
- Turned Bronson Lace
- “Gebrochene” (Ms and Ws Twill)
- and many other bits and pieces!
I will include some of these samples as part of my next weaving certificate submission (Advanced level) next year.
If you managed to make it to Goulburn to see this exhibition, then I’m hugely grateful: thank you for taking the time to travel and visit!
If you missed it, here is a very small selection of the works that were on display, up close and personal.
